The Lord Was Crucified For Me

The third track from my album “Jesus On My Mind” is called “The Lord Was Crucified For Me”. I wrote it in 1985, just a year after becoming a believer. I’ve always loved this song because it conveys the undeniable changes that were going on in my life after I first met the Lord. I was a brand new Christian at the time and I was overwhelmed by the sense of God’s love for me. I felt that whatever had to go in this world to get me closer to Jesus was well worth it. When the apostle Paul talks about counting the world as loss for the sake of knowing Jesus Christ in the book of Philippians, well, that was totally me! I had just discovered the one thing that really mattered in life and I wasn’t about to let this world get in the way of it. The secret that the apostle Paul knew, and that I had just discovered, was that Jesus had not just come into the world to save a faceless, nameless planet of people- He had come and died for ME, and He loved ME. Knowing that, and I mean really knowing that to my core, is what changed me. This was not just religion, I had met the Son of God, and He loved me! The apostle Paul put it like this…

“The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” -Galatians 2:20

Recording “The Lord Was Crucified For Me”

This is the first recording I’ve made of the song even though it was written so long ago. The piano part was played by Clay Hecocks during an extended period when I lived in Florida. Clay would often help me out by doing some piano parts for me that I used when I was traveling to churches to sing. (Clay, by the way, is an excellent songwriter in his own right and has written and produced many worship songs.) I took Clay’s original piano part that he did for me back in the 90′s and used it for this recording. I ended up writing a string/brass arrangement to add to what he had already done with strings and piano, and then recorded new drums and vocals for the song.

The truths that are in this song stand the test of time. Jesus will forever be the one thing we need most in life, and if we let Him, He will literally flood our hearts with His very presence.

The Lord Was Crucified For Me- Lyrics

by: Mike Helms

My heart is filled with Jesus, His blood runs through my veins
Oh, the Lord was crucified for me,
And I offer no excuses for the way I praise His Name
Oh, the Lord was crucified for me

Oh, the precious blood of Jesus shed upon the cross
Is enough to make me take the world and count it all as loss,
For the precious blood of God came down for all the world to see
Oh, the Lord was crucified for me

I gave my heart to Jesus, to Jesus all the way
Oh, the Lord was crucified for me,
I gave my heart to Jesus, for the price that He had paid
Oh, the Lord was crucified for me

Oh, the precious blood of Jesus shed upon the cross
Is enough to make me take the world and count it all as loss,
For the precious blood of God came down for all the world to see
Oh, the Lord was crucified for me
