When God Speaks

Today I want to talk about revelation- God speaking, and me being in a place where I’m actually able and ready to hear and respond. There’s a lot that could be said about this subject, but let’s keep it simple and to the point…

When God speaks amazing things happen, therefore I want to be able to hear Him!

There are some who have a big problem with the idea that God still speaks to people.

They’ll admit that God used to speak at some distant time in history, point to what’s been recorded in the bible, and say that was the end of it. They think that because we have the written Word of God there is no longer any need for God to speak.

The passage I’m going to share with you must really scare those people, because in it God employs an “angel of the Lord” to speak on His behalf.

Not just God speaking, but now we have angels speaking to people!

And you thought being a Christian just meant going to church and listening to your Pastor speak!

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road–the desert road–that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” -Acts 8:28

That’s some pretty specific direction. You probably never thought angels knew the roads in your city, but they do!

The next verse tells us that Philip “started out”.

Starting out is actually a very important part of listening to God and doing His will. Listening comes first, but then we need to respond.

Philip starts out and as he’s on his way things start to unfold.

Nothing happens if you don’t listen, but nothing also happens if you fail to respond.

In this case Philip did listen, and He did something about what he heard, so he ends up meeting some people by what some would call “chance”. What we really have here is actually a God ordained event. Now notice what happens next…

The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” -Acts 8:29

So we go from an encounter with an angel to hearing the Spirit of God speak.

There’s all kinds of supernatural things going on here! So now we have an angel talking to Philip and the Holy Spirit speaking as well.

So what did Philip do?

Did he shrug it off and continue on with his day?

No, he ran up to the chariot just as the Spirit told him to do!

This is a guy who has no trouble believing that God speaks to him. He was open and receptive and did what He was told to do.

Why is this important?

Because the amazing stuff happens for those who have ears to hear!

“Whoever has ears, let them hear.” -Matthew 11:15

That’s Jesus speaking.

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” -Revelation 3:22

That’s Jesus speaking again!

Everyone has ears, but not everyone hears

God is speaking, but we need to be open and receptive and believe that He will speak to us.

The bible is filled with passages that show us God speaks but I can’t find even one where He lost His ability to speak!

One of my favorite verses that I often use in my own personal times of prayer is found in Ephesians:

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.” -Ephesians 1:17

The ultimate revelation is truly knowing Jesus Christ.

We need eyes that see and ears that hear for that to happen.

The same Holy Spirit that reveals Jesus Christ to us is able to  guide and lead us in all aspects of life if we will be open to hearing His voice!
