Things To Come

I’m going to have to rename Highway 217. I think I’ll call it “Revelation Highway”!

217 is the road I take to get to my church as well as a small little home group that I’m a part of. I’m often praying on the way to where I’m going and God is often speaking to me on the way there.

Stop and think for a minute what I just said…

“I’m often praying on the way to where I’m going, and God is often speaking to me on the way there!”

Not just on Highway 217, but throughout my life I’ve been speaking to God and God’s been speaking to me.

I’m always praying about where I’m going, and God has a habit of telling me what’s to come!

“He will show you what’s to come…” –John 16:12

From the beginning of my walk with Jesus, to the present day, God has never stopped speaking to me about things that were ahead of me.

I was pondering that today, and I began to recall all the different times God has spoken to me about future events in my life…

In both big and small situations, God has often revealed to me what’s to come.

I like the way the NASB puts it because I think it reflects a deeper truth about the way the Holy Spirit speaks.

“But whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” -John 16:12

It’s not just that the Holy Spirit shows us what’s to come, He discloses what’s to come.

Look at the definition of disclose:

1. make (secret or new information) known.

2. allow (something) to be seen, especially by uncovering it.

I love this because in my experience this is exactly what the Holy Spirit does!

The Holy Spirit reveals secret things that we would not otherwise know, and brings us new information we need.

At times He does this by peering into the future and showing us what’s to come, and at other times He does this by uncovering things about our present circumstances that we might not be aware of.

My present and my future- The Holy Spirit speaks into both.

There have been many times when the Holy Spirit has entered into a situation and uncovered things that I was not aware of so that I would be able to know what was going on. He has allowed me to see things that would have otherwise been hidden. There have even been times where God has in real-time shown me what other people are doing, letting me see as it happens, even though I’m not there in person!

The Holy Spirit is able to uncover things that are done in secret!

Then again, God is able to show me in advance a future that has yet to unfold. He’s done it many times and often in stunning detail. It never fails to amaze me, although it really shouldn’t be a surprise, because the Word of God tells us that He will “show us what’s to come”.

The Holy Spirit unveils, discloses and opens up the secrets of the future. In my post, “God’s Prophetic Whisper” I talk about this aspect of the Holy Spirit speaking about future events.

Why does God speak to us about future events?

Not to be too simplistic, but I think the main reason God tells us things in advance is so that we will know that He’s walking through life with us.

He is intimately aware of every detail of our life and He wants us to know that He’s intimately involved in every detail as well.

When I started this post I began by telling you how God and I are always having conversations with each other.

That’s friendship! That’s intimacy!

That’s the best part about being a child of God!

“Enoch spent his life in fellowship with God, and then he disappeared, because God took him away.” -Genesis 5:24
