Heavenly Visions

I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. —Acts 26:19

I’ve been writing about the Holy Spirit Adventure that I’ve been on since God sent revival into my heart. A huge part of encountering God is obviously found in prayer. Recently I wrote about a prayer meeting that I went to where God came down in extraordinary power. During that prayer meeting one of my brothers in the Lord shared with me a vision that God had given him for me. Later that day I went to a home group, in a completely different town, where someone else shared THE EXACT SAME VISION that was given to me earlier in the day at the prayer meeting!

Today I’d like to briefly touch on the fact that God speaks through supernatural visions. Reading the book of Acts will undeniably confirm this.

In this post I’m simply going to testify to a few of the instances where I have personally received prophetic visions from others in the body of Christ.

Why would God choose to use a vision to speak to us? Looking in the book of Acts we can see that Peter was both given a vision, and a confirmation of his vision, so that Peter would clearly understand what God was trying to tell him. God wanted to establish a clear reference point for Peter to stand on. In explaining his vision, Peter points out that immediately after receiving it, there came quick confirmation of it.

“RIGHT THEN three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them.” -Acts 11:11

What unfolded as Peter obeyed the Holy Spirit was a series of divine providential appointments! God used this important vision in Peter’s life to establish Peter in a very necessary and important truth that would affect his entire ministry going forward. Peter’s vision was a turning point for him in understanding God’s salvation toward the Gentiles.

“So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way? When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.” – Acts 11:17-18

God speaks through visions

Although supernatural, visions are part of the natural way that God speaks. Visions are not just something that were given to prophets from the Old Testament and relegated to the past. God speaks through visions today!

“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” -Acts2:17

Many years ago I was out in the driveway changing the oil in my car when a woman I knew came out of her house holding a piece of paper on which she had drawn a vision that God had given her for me.

The vision was very simple, a drawing of an obelisk, and the sun and rays coming down. I really had no idea what it meant, or if it was even from God. It was the first time anyone had ever told me they had a vision from God for me, and the truth is, I didn’t think much of it! It really meant nothing to me and so I kind of passed it off with a half hearted prayer and I set it aside.

Well, five years earlier I had written a pro-life song. About a year after being given the vision, I received a flyer in the mail with a drawing that was exactly like the vision that I had been given! It was an advertisement for a large pro-life rally that was going to take place in Washington, DC on the grounds of the Washington Monument. I suddenly realized that the obelisk that she had drawn was the Washington Monument. I thought, “Is God wanting me to sing at this rally?” So I sent them my song, and later heard back from them that I was invited to sing my song at the Rally for Life 1990. When I was up on the stage singing the song the perspective of the Washington Monument and the placement of the sun was exactly the same as in the vision that this woman was given and had drawn on that piece of paper! Had I not been given that vision, I would probably have never sent them my music, and would have never been invited to sing there. God used the vision to show me the door that he wanted me to walk through, and because I went forward in response to that vision I ended up singing at the largest pro-life rally ever held in Washington D.C.!

That was my introduction to visions!

A Season of Visions

More recently, I was given four visions at a home group in Woodland, Washington in September of 2017. I wrote them down in my journal and once again set them aside.

At the end of January 2018, I was at a different home group in Washougal, Washington. It was my first time there and nobody knew me. God had just done an absolutely amazing thing in my life and brought me into a new season in my relationship with Him but nobody in the group knew that. Much to my surprise, somebody stood up and shared one of the four visions that I had received in September of 2017!

This was not one of those, “God is going to bless your life” prophetic words that’s very general and could apply to anyone, but it was a very specific descriptive vision about entering into a new season and what God was going to do, and here was somebody who didn’t know me in a completely different town speaking the exact same vision to me five months later! At the time it was given I already knew that the first vision had been fulfilled. I was walking in it! This time the vision came rather as a confirmation of the veracity of the first vision given to me in 2017. It was like God was saying, “See, I told you so! But just so there’s no confusion in your mind I’ll give you the vision TWICE! Before it happens and after.”

That was pretty awesome! But God wasn’t done.

Just recently, in April of 2018, I felt that God was specifically telling me that I had now transitioned into another important period of His plan for my life. Here I was again in Washougal, Washington, when again to my surprise, someone shared the SECOND vision that I had been given in Woodland, Washington in September of 2017!

This vision was very specific and even more complicated than the first one and there is no possible way somebody could have manufactured it in their mind. I hadn’t told anyone about it. It was full of detail, and EIGHT MONTHS LATER somebody again in a different town, from a different home church saw the EXACT SAME VISION and wrote it down on a piece of paper!

It was like God was saying AGAIN, “See, I told you so! But just so there’s no confusion in your mind I’m giving you this vision twice too! Before it happens and after.”

Heavenly Visions

God is a supernatural God and He does supernatural things, and visions are part of that.

I could go on to other examples, but the point is clear, God uses visions to speak to His people. Visions, it seems, are often given when very direct guidance and confirmation of God’s direction or purposes are needed. A vision can be used by God to establish faith and confidence in the will and purposes of God.

“During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us. After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.” -Acts 16:9-10

One of the prayers of my heart is to see heaven come down to earth in my life. That’s one of the things Jesus says we should be praying for.

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” -Matthew 6:10

When I’m walking around down here on this Earth praying to God, talking to him about all kinds of things, I don’t just want some spiritual prayer to go up to heaven, I want to see God manifest answers to those prayers here on Earth. I want what’s up there, to be happening down here where I live, where I walk, where I eat and breathe.

Heavenly visions are a part of manifesting the reality of Heaven. God is able to use them to help us walk out the things that he has for us on this Earth just as he used them to guide, direct, correct and bring comfort for those in the book of Acts.
