Focused Praying In Tongues

“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.” -1 Corinthians 14:14

I’d like to encourage you toward focused praying in tongues.

It’s very common to hear that since we don’t know what we’re praying for while in tongues that it’s no big deal to let your mind wander, and in a way, just babble out without any regard to what we’re doing. In my opinion, that’s about the last thing you want to do while praying in tongues! Here’s why…

Just because you may not understand in your mind what you’re praying doesn’t mean your spirit doesn’t understand what you’re praying.

You see what the verse says: “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays…”

My spirit is praying and it knows exactly what it’s praying about! When I pray in tongues I get VERY focused. I intently feel what is in my spirit and pray it out. Sometimes my tongues are gentle and sweet, sometimes very worshipful, sometimes I feel like I’m in a battle and my tongues sound like it, sometimes I’m pleading in tongues, sometimes I literally start crying! You get the idea. Praying in tongues is a spiritual exercise so get spiritually minded and be spiritually focused! Get a sense of what’s going on in your spirit and PRAY IT OUT! FOCUS! By doing so you will be learning how to hear God’s voice and follow His leading in your spirit. This isn’t some purposeless activity, in fact, most of the time when I pray in tongues my whole body is involved, not just my tongue! It’s really no different than me speaking English- I use my hands, my arms and my body while I speak! Why would tongues be any different? I’m expressing myself to God!

I would also add that the Word of God teaches we can pray to interpret what we’re saying in tongues. I do that all the time and I often feel God will give me understanding at least in part or in short phrases that tell me what I’m praying about.

“For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.” -1 Corinthians 14:13

I can see very little value in purposeless praying whether in tongues or in a language you can understand.

Get FOCUSED, mean business with God, and see what a difference it makes!
