I saw a girl coming down the escalator today carrying a box of nicotine patches. For a brief moment the image was frozen in time as if I’d just taken a mental snapshot. It occurred to me that she probably never envisioned herself coming down that escalator holding that box.

We never think we’ll be the addicted one.

We never think that someday our freedom will turn into chains that bind us.

I don’t have much more to say about it than that. I don’t smoke but I can totally identify with that girl. If we were smart we’d think of the end before we got started, but, of course, we’re usually not that smart.

It makes me think of this bible verse…

“The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority; And My people love it so! But what will you do at the end of it?” -Jeremiah 5:31

Isn’t that the way it goes? The lies we tell ourselves! We have plenty of people in this world who will reinforce our lies too and tell us exactly what we want to hear to justify whatever it is we’re thinking about doing. It doesn’t even matter if we seek out advice from religious or spiritual people. There will always be someone around to tell us what we want to hear. The real question to ask is, “How will this end?” In an allegory- If the answer is you coming down an escalator with a box of nicotine patches you might want to rethink things.
