A Way To Be Forgotten

As we travel though this digital age one thing is clear- We need a way to be forgotten. In a time where everything we do is being recorded, compiled, stored and sold we need a way to erase the slate and start over again. It’s actually a basic human need that’s addressed in the bible.

“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” -Hebrews 8:12

Yes, it’s a basic human need that we be able to move beyond our past and not be forever bound by it. It’s one of the most loving things that God can do for us! Our past, more often than not, contains a lot of things we really don’t need or want to carry into the future. It shackles us and imprisons us so that we can’t enjoy the present.

Jesus says, “Hey, you know all that stuff? It’s forgotten- I’ll never bring it up again.”

Our digital age needs something like that. People are not just statistics to be cataloged and stored. We’ve got hearts and minds and dreams, and forgive me if this is a little bit cliché, but we need to be able to soar! It’s kind of hard to do that when you’ve got a great big digital rock reminding you of your past hanging over your head. We’ve only just begun to enter this digital lifestyle, and believe me, the generation growing up in it now will have every stupid thing they’ve ever said or done forever recorded and stored.

Remembering no more… that’s HUGE!

We are at a time in human history when every one of us is being profiled and labeled. A dossier is being built that says, “This is who you are!” A record of your life is being kept whether you like it or not.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, there are also records being kept in heaven.

“The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.” -Revelation 20:12

So, in a way, you can’t escape this data collection. They’re doing it here and in heaven. The big difference is that God’s loves to erase the past. Facebook, not so much! It’s common knowledge now that huge government data centers are siphoning our lives. That information will probably live on even after we’re dead and gone! There’s so many points of collection from so many sources and almost none of them want to see your info erased. I can also promise you that none of them is holding it with the loving heart that God has.

None of us can really stand under the scrutiny of this digital age. I’m afraid the world is going to be a sadder place as time goes on because we need more than hard, cold, clinical judgment of facts.

“Mercy triumphs over judgment.” -James 2:13

People change and the past is not our full story. God is really the only one who can be trusted with all this information about us. Yes, he’s also collecting it and recording everything about us, but He has another book as well, it’s called “The Book of Life”. Everyone who belongs to Jesus has their name written there and He will “remember their sins no more.”
