Why Isn’t Jesus More Popular?

The one man who has, and will, effect human history more than anyone else is not very popular on YouTube.

Jimmy Fallon and Emma Stone lip syncing have close to 70,000,000 views. Taylor Swift’s “Blankspace” has 1,589,259,750 views. “The Gospel of John – THE LIFE OF JESUS” movie is the first result when you type “Jesus” into the search box. It’s gets 2,098,316 views. Not bad, but not even close to Taylor.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Jesus trending. He does show up in my recommendations for YouTube on my TV but that’s only because I search for stuff that has to do with Him.

Jesus isn’t the most popular person in the world. He’s not showing up in Facebook’s newsfeed either. And yet, everyone will one day know His name- and get this- BOW DOWN TO HIM!

“So that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth…” -Philippians 3:10

You’d think that would be important to know about, right? The living and the dead, the famous and the unknown, the rich and poor… EVERYONE is going to bow down to Jesus.

But “Taylor swift transformation make up” still gets far more views than that “LIFE OF JESUS” movie, coming in at 7,424,133 views compared to 2,098,316 views for “Jesus”.

And that’s not even counting all the cat videos out there. Funny Cats Compilation has 93,300,027 views.

You know what? I love my cat! He’s totally awesome! He’s a Devon Rex and those cats are so cool- but He doesn’t deserve more views than Jesus.

So what’s going on with the world that most people have so little interest in Jesus?

Satan doesn’t have to resort to wild trickery when it comes to keeping people from spiritual pursuits. Here’s two simple things He does that work together to keep people from thinking about eternal matters.

Distractions. The world is filled with distractions and Satan has always used them to keep people so occupied that they never stop to think about serious things like life and death and living for God.

“All too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.” -Mark 4:9

Satan’s plan is simple- Keep people so distracted that they never hear or care about Jesus. If they do hear about Him just pile on more distractions!

People have always been easily distracted and today it’s easier than ever for the Devil to use this tactic. My wife and I were driving through Ecola Park in Oregon when we noticed a man walking down the road looking down at his cell phone. He was so distracted he walked right past a giant Elk that stood only a couple of feet away!

Spiritual Oppression. There are powerful unseen forces at work in the invisible spiritual realm. These forces can exert pressure, temptation, delusion and other assorted affects on people.

“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
2 Corinthians 4:4

Once people have their eyes opened and can clearly see the reality of Jesus the world suddenly doesn’t look as shiny and inviting. Heaven and hell and spiritual things are actually very interesting. God’s love is so compelling, His holiness so beautiful, that it has an extremely strong attracting power. There is a war on for our souls and one way that Satan tries to win that war is by sending a strong delusion or blindness so that we come under his oppressive influence. Spiritual oppression is real and the only way out of it is through the truth of God’s Word and power of His Holy Spirit. When people are exposed to God’s truth and the Holy Spirit reveals Jesus to people’s hearts there is a way to freedom for those who have been held in bondage to spiritual oppression.

Is Jesus Really That Unpopular?

For now Taylor Swift and cat videos may have more views on YouTube than videos about Jesus do, but consider this- According to Guinness World Records the best selling book of nonfiction is “The Bible“.

God is still at work revealing Jesus to the world! God is not done by a long shot, and a whole lot of people are still reading His Book!

The millions of views some get on YouTube is very impressive, but it can’t compare to the views God is soon going to get! While it may look like God is irrelevant when compared to all the stuff that’s constantly flashing before us on the internet, the whole world is about to get a reality check about who is in charge and what reality really means. One of the most startlingly prophetic verses in the bible is found in Revelation 1:7.

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen.

Talk about views! At the return of Jesus “every eye will see him”. Here’s the part that really speaks to me- “Even those who pierced him”- Even the ones who drove a spear into His side when He was crucified are going to witness this event! The sad thing is that most will not be happy to see Jesus returning- it’s going to be a wake up call that will cause “all peoples of the earth” to mourn because of Him. They’ll mourn because they will suddenly see that the One they rejected is in fact the very Son of God and the most important and pivotal person in all human history. He is, in fact, the One who came to save a world that largely rejects Him.
