I finally finished "Where is the love"! My wife is thrilled because she's been asking me to record this song for a long time now. It's one of her favorites that I've written; I got started on it and then set it aside for awhile. But she was very persistent! She believes that every Christian needs to hear this song. The truth is, she's probably right! Not because I'm such a great songwriter or anything either; it's the words that really matter with this one. I don't know what it is about us Christians, but we're the most forgiven people on the planet and somehow we manage to forget that and turn into little Pharisees!
Let's be honest, we usually start this Christian walk humbled and just thankful that God would even love us at all. Didn't you wonder why He would love someone like you? I sure did. I wondered why God would love me when I'd done so many things I knew He hated! It blew me away. Really, that's what changed me. I just couldn't believe God would love me like that, and it made me love Him all the more.
It also made me love everyone else! I couldn't help but want to tell people how much God loved them too. And that's exactly what I did. I went around telling everyone how much Jesus loved them. You could find me talking to people at work, or out at the mall, or walking down the beach... I just wanted people to know about Jesus and how much He loved them! I can remember quite a few times when people would tell me, "You don't get it, God probably wouldn't want me" and I'd turn around and say, "Are you crazy? God's totally wanting to be your friend! He loves you!"
Ok, so how did I go from that to being the town Pharisee? Man, I don't know... What I do know is that many of us become like that, if only for a season. I guess we forget how it was at the beginning and just how grateful we were that Jesus saved us. We started to "live for Jesus", and wanted to clean up our act and be holy... and before we knew it, we got holier than thou! That's why I say in my song...
"And where is the love that Jesus taught you?
Have you so quickly forgotten it?
Oh it wouldn’t be so bad,
but he forgave you all your sins
and completely wiped them out…
and it wasn’t to make you judge of the world!"
It's like we develop amnesia or something! We forget how bad we really are, and how much we needed, and still need Jesus... somehow we morph into judges, and instead of smiling God's grace, we wear a look of scorn! Gospel means, "GOOD NEWS!" , do why do I look like so miserable?
It must seem awfully strange to Jesus to see us act this way. We can't even come close to saving ourselves, so He does it all for us; He forgives us our sin and totally wipes it out. And what do we do? We turn around and point our finger at someone else. Jesus must watch in amazement at how hard we are on others who are in the EXACT SAME PLACE that we once were!
Man, if we could just remember where we came from, we'd be a lot happier, much more grateful... and so would everyone else!
