God Speaks In Many And Various Ways

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways.” -Hebrews 1:1

In reading about the birth of Jesus I was taken by the variety of people and various ways in which God spoke to them about His birth. Jesus did not come silently into the world. He was announced, talked about, foretold from the very beginning of the bible right on through the many centuries that passed. And God didn’t just speak to prophets. He communicated the birth of Jesus to everyday ordinary people like you and me. Read through the first few chapters of Luke to see what I mean- God was speaking and He still is!

One of the irrefutable facts of the bible is that God speaks and listens. God communicates. We only need to get three verses into the bible before we’re confronted with the fact that God speaks.

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” -Genesis 1:3

From that point on the bible is literally filled with examples of God speaking!

It shouldn’t surprise us that God speaks. If you look at the world He created one of the obvious features is that living things communicate. That’s a point prophets tried to get us to understand.

“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths.” Psalm 135:15-17

Does it make any sense at all that a living God would not be a speaking God? Living things communicate!

I can tell you that God has spoken to me at various times and in various ways on many different occasions and I do not claim to be a prophet. He has often spoken to me very specifically about things big and small simply because I am His child.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” -Romans 8:14

The truth is, one of the things I enjoy most about being His child is that I get to hear Him speak to me. I know that He is involved in my life! He’s not just out there somewhere in the distance unconnected and unconcerned. He speaks and He listens.

“Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?'” -Genesis 18:13

Not only did God speak to Abraham about Sarah having a son, but He was also aware that Sarah was “listening at the entrance to the tent” and laughed in disbelief when she heard what God had said!

God was not just speaking, He was listening. He was interacting and communicating, but what else would we expect a living God to do?

It’s a shame that there have been even well known pastors who have confidently proclaimed that God is no longer speaking as He once did. They claim that since the bible is complete that there is no longer any reason for God to speak. I will give you one- He is ALIVE! Living things communicate and God is certainly no exception to that fact.

I use the bible to test the things I believe God is speaking to me, I do not use it to shut my ears to what He may be saying to me today!
