I heard a great message last Sunday about prayer.  My wife and I were out of town and since we knew of a church there we decided to visit.  As I sat and listened to the Pastor I was impressed by the Spirit and conviction by which he spoke; these were words God wanted me to hear!  And what were they?  Simply that we are called to stand in the gap for others… to be the “middle man” between people in need and our God who is able to meet that need.  We know that, but how profound it is!  What power God is able to unleash simply because we’ve prayed!

After the Pastor’s message we were asked to form groups and pray.  We were near a young couple and so joined together with them in prayer.  We learned that they were going through a very hard time.  His name was Brian, and he had been receiving numerous treatments for brain and lung cancer and his wife was pregnant.  I don’t for a minute believe it was an accident that we “happened” to be there that morning sitting behind them.  Whether it’s because I’d lost my Mom to Ovarian cancer 4 years ago or God just wanted us there to pray, my heart was filled with compassion… and hope!  We had been given the privilege and opportunity to lift this couple before the God who performs miracles! 

When we pray we connect with One in whom all things are possible.  When we are on our knees we are lifted into the very presence of God!  It is as if we have wings that carry us into heaven itself.  Discouragement, sickness, setbacks, disappointments, crushed dreams, all have a way of draining our hope and taking the life out of us.  Through prayer we’re able to reconnect with the “God of hope”.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  (Romans 15:13)
